“The girls are in bed, now let’s talk,” I said, getting on the bed sitting Indian style across from Pharaoh.

“Ight this is how this is going to go, we going question for question.”

“Okay, I’ll go first. How do you make your money?” This was one of the most important questions I could ask. I don’t think I could deal with a nigga hugging the block and coming in all times of the night. Now that I think about it, Pharaoh always came by my house no later than ten, so he couldn’t be a corner boy.

“I set up buyers with sellers.”

“That’s it?”

“That’s all you need to know Slim. I’m sure I don’t have to sit and spell out exactly what I’m setting up the sellers to buy.”

“I guess,” I said, shrugging it off.

“Where’s your pops?” he asked.

“I don’t know and I really don’t care. My father has never been in my life and I’m okay with that,” I answered honestly. When I was younger, I used to wonder who he was and why he didn’t want me. After watching my mom though, I started to understand more and never really cared after that.

“You never wanted to find him or anything?” Pharaoh asked.

“Nah. How long have you owned the club?” I asked.

“Since I was 20. I opened that club and the salon at the same time. It was a way for me to clean up my money. What happened with your first love?”

“How do you know I was ever in love?” I asked.

“I can from the way you act. You try to act as if you don’t have time for a relationship because of Paige, but really it’s because someone hurt you and you don’t wanna go through that again. Instead of letting a nigga in, you focus all your time on Paige,” he observed, reading me like a book.

“You’re right, but looking back at the relationship I wasn’t in love, it was more of a crush. I thought what we had was love but once I gave him what he wanted he just stopped talking to me all together,” I admitted, shaking my head. Having to go through that alone really fucked with me because I didn’t know how to handle it.

“That’s fucked up Slim, but you can’t let what one nigga did fuck it up for every other nigga, especially ‘cause that shit happened while you were in high school. A lot of high school relationships can’t be taken seriously.”

“Yea I know but I’m trying, which is why I’m sitting here with your big headed ass,” I laughed, punching him in his arm.

“You one to talk about a big head, but I don’t say much.”

“Aye, don’t talk about my head. Why did you start messing with Bia?”

“Man why you have to go and bring her up?” he said, sucking his teeth. I really didn’t care how much he sucked his teeth, he was going to answer this question because this was something I needed to know.

“Come on, we said we were going to be honest with each other.
